Understanding The Structure

Hair is simply a threadlike extension of the skin and scalp. It has no feeling, due to the absence of nerves. To understand what makes hair grow or cease to grow, it is necessary to take a look at its structure.
For every hair on the body, there is a hair follicle in the skin's surface. A follicle is simple a tube-like cavity, embedded in the skin or scalp. Encased in this cavity or follicle is the hair root. At the bottom of the skin indentation is a projection named the papilla. It is the papilla with which we much concern ourselves, for it is the mother of new hair, the reproductive organ. If it ceases to function, hair stops growing. As long as it is healthy and well-nourished, new hair can be produced.
This information is quite significant. Ounce a person comprehends the growth structure, he can then realize the importance of, and the odds for, trying to personally control it.

More Than Just An Ornament

As men has realized from very early times, a full head of well-cared-for hair can certainly enhance his appearance. It can accomplish a wide range of becoming physical effects from softening the contour of a face to distracting from the lines of age. Psychologically, it is quite significant in influencing the impression others have of a man.

Yet, we do not have hair for adornment alone. It has a far more important significance--that of protection. Hair is found over every area of the body, with the exception of only the palm, soles, lips, and eyelids. It grows for a reason; in fact, for many reasons.

The shorter, bristly hair of the eyebrows protects the eyes by diverting sweat, while the eyelashes function to ward off dust particles and the glare of light.

Helping in the evaporation of body perspiration is a finer, downy-soft hair called lanugo hair, found on the cheeks, forehead, and nearly all areas of the anatomy.

The scalp grows a much longer type of hair. In the absence of at least a partial covering of this hair, its function cannot be carried out. It was intended as a protective coating or padding. It provides thermal insulation against the cold, wind, rain, and serves in an opposite capacity, when required, by offering atmospheric insulation from the heat and direct sunshine. In addition, this hair controls the sweat and secretions of the scalp.

To claim that the desire to retain one's hair, therefore, is merely an expression of vanity, based on social or aesthetic conditioning, is to err greatly. The presence of hair is a definite necessity for a man.

Introduction To Hair Replacement

"Deprive a lion of his mane, the cock of his comb, the peacock of the emerald plumage of his tail, and ram and deer of their horns, and they not only become displeasing to the eye, but lose much of their power and vigor..."

The above words are more than a century old. They appear in Alexander Rowland's book, The Human Hair, published in England in 1853. He wrote them in support of the opinion that men should be allowed to grow their hair and beards as they wished. Men of previous centuries were often looked down upon and tortured if they refused to conform to the caprice of fashion.

We live in an age that is the freest and most liberal since the creation of Adam, and yet we live in an age where some men, no longer required to fight for their idea of a masculine hairstyle, seemingly have lost all enthusiasm for giving it the attention due it. Is it a fear of being categorized as vain, or has it simply become too much trouble?

Sure, we've come a long way, but not so great a distance that people no longer judge a man by his appearance. The days are gone when man had to cope with taxes or imprisonment for the length of his hair, but the image of ourselves which we present to the world still has some effect on our success in this area.

True, the laws standardizing men's hairstyles have been been abolished for many years, but there will always be a much more significant law in existence--an unwritten law of human nature that a man must care about himself before he can expect others to appreciate him.

We live today in a competitive, youth-oriented world. A man who looks older than his age, because he fails to keep up his appearance, often loses out. No one may admit that to him, but as a rule, the promotion and the girl go to the man who looks as if he could handle them--because he's already shown his associates he could take care of himself.

Generally, a man who succeeds stands out form the others and has a certain amount of class. But class isn't wearing $300 suits and keeping up with the latest technology. Class is knowing how to discretely bring out the best in yourself and in the environment and people who surround you. Class is not worrying about what other people will think about you when you believe you're right. It's not having and hang-ups about doing what is required to honestly improve a situation.

This is about hair and the absence of it. If Mother Nature had intended for men to go through life without a full head of hair, she wouldn't have allowed him to grow his mane in the first place. The purposes of hair are not just social and aesthetic--they are much more serious than that. And thus, the reason for this blog: To facilitate the modern male's endeavor to retain nature's gift (or the look that nature intended for him) for as long as possible.

It begins with bits of trivia and folklore on hair and delves into the facts regarding its growth and life span. The true causes and cures of baldness are explored, as well as methods of hair replacement(not just those offered by me www.davidhansen.com. As I continue writing these blogs the decision will be yours: should I be bald or not.

Make no mistakes about it however. I offer you this blog, not to keep up with the rest of the world, but to enable you to keep up with yourself, with the man inside you who has young ideas and a great deal of life to live, but how may be stifled by an older appearance that fools the rest of the world.

If you think life has dealt you a bad hand as far as your hair is concerned, this is your chance for a reshuffle. If you're ready for that, this book is dedicated to you--the man of today.
